Understand today
How the work is done now, and where time, money or data is lost.
We help businesses evaluate software options, define requirements, estimate costs and turn ideas into working software, with one team from planning through support. Start with a free consultation and a free scoped estimate.
A software consultant helps you turn a business problem into the right software decision: what to build, change or leave alone, what it will take, and in what order to do it.
Our software development consulting services help businesses evaluate options, define requirements, estimate costs and oversee implementation, and then build and support the software with the same team.
How the work is done now, and where time, money or data is lost.
Separate the must-haves from the nice-to-haves.
Enhance what you have, integrate existing products, or build custom software.
Turn the chosen option into a written scope, an estimate and a delivery plan.
In firms that also build, like ours, deliver the software and support it afterwards.
Software consulting isn't always about building something new. Sometimes the best outcome is one of these.
Fix the workflow before adding software.
Integrate the systems you already run.
Move an older application to a current platform.
When a commercial product is the better investment.
We don't start an engagement assuming custom software is the answer. Sometimes extending a platform you already use, or buying a product, is faster and lower risk. If that's the better option, we'll tell you.
Some consulting firms only advise and hand you a report. We consult and build: the project lead and developers who scope your project are the people who deliver it, and they stay with it after launch on a support plan.
If you only want the plan, you can stop after discovery with no obligation to continue.
Looking for a firm to build your software end to end? See custom software development →
Bring in a software consultant when a software decision is expensive to get wrong, when you don't have the in-house expertise to evaluate the options, or when your team doesn't have the capacity to take on another major project. While your staff keeps the business running, a consulting partner provides the planning, requirements, estimates and development capacity to move the project forward.
We help you decide whether to buy a product, extend what you have, or build.
Web application development →We help you decide whether to rehost, replatform, refactor or rebuild, and in what order.
Application modernization →We help you decide which integrations matter most and how to connect them (ERP, Dynamics 365 Sales, SAP, Oracle, Salesforce).
Custom software development →We help you decide whether your code or platform allows it, and what a pilot should prove first.
AI integration →We help you decide what the first release must include, and what can wait.
Web application development →We help you decide the fastest way to finish, starting with what state the code is in.
See the OnTheClock result →Not sure whether you need a consultant, a development team or just a few more developers? That's a fair first question for a free consultation. If you only need extra developers, see IT staff augmentation.
Most of the people who call us are deciding whether, and how, to invest in software.
Evaluating a software investment.
Responsible for technology decisions.
Trying to remove manual work.
Building a new digital product.

Products taken to market with TSigma, MadDog and OnTheClock.
Consulting saves the most before you commit: before you sign a contract for a product, approve a budget, or start a rebuild. The later it comes, the more it costs to change course, but it can still rescue a project that has stalled.
Options compared side by side, including "don't build": an existing product is sometimes the better choice.
A written scope and an estimate you can plan with, so the budget is based on the work, not a guess.
A review of the current application and the business rules it contains, so nothing important is lost in the move.
An honest view of what's finished, what's left and what it will take, then a plan to finish it.
A support plan with a set number of hours each month, and on the Premium plan, monthly meetings and roadmap guidance.
OnTheClock came to us after another vendor had worked on its mobile app for over a year without finishing it. We finished the rest in 6 weeks. See the project
Our engagements follow four phases. The first two are where most of the consulting happens, and the first one costs nothing.
A conversation about the business problem, who will use the software, how the work is done today and which systems are involved. You don't need a specification or a budget.
We write down the scope and estimate it at no charge: up to five business days for small projects (about 8 to 12 weeks of work), three to four weeks for medium and larger ones. For larger or complex projects we recommend paid discovery: wireframes, a requirements document or in-scope and out-of-scope list, an estimate and a high-level project plan, with no obligation to continue with us.
Sprints are usually two weeks (four when your schedule needs it). At the end of each we demo working software, checked against acceptance criteria agreed with you. You test the finished software in user acceptance testing, and nothing goes to production until you approve it.
We deploy, hand over documentation, and support the system on a monthly plan: Essential (10 hours, response within 2 business days), Professional (20 hours, next business day) or Premium (40 hours, same day during business hours).
The step-by-step detail, the team you'll work with, and contracts and ownership are on How we work.
The consultation and the scoped estimate are free. After that, you pay for the work in one of three ways, chosen to fit how well the requirements are defined.
You know the total before work starts. Delays don't raise the price; only a change in scope does, and we agree any change with you first.
Each phase or milestone has its own agreed price.
Evolving products, ongoing enhancements, support and staff augmentation. You pay for the hours used.
A project can combine them, for example a fixed-price first release followed by hourly enhancements.
Our own team in India can lower the cost of a project; offshore and hybrid work is quoted per project. See offshore development and IT staff augmentation.
Is it worth it? A few weeks of scoping costs far less than building the wrong thing.
Success is measured against goals you agree at the start: the business problem the software has to solve, and the acceptance criteria each feature has to meet.
Discovery or the estimate records the goals, the scope and what's out of scope. Each feature gets acceptance criteria that you sign off.
Sprint reviews show finished features against their acceptance criteria, and progress is tracked in Azure DevOps, so a slip shows up in days or weeks, not months.
You approve the software in user acceptance testing before it goes live. After launch, the result that counts is the business one: hours saved, fewer errors, more volume handled. On the Premium support plan, we meet monthly to review the system and plan what's next.
What happens if a project falls behind: see our FAQ.
Before you hire a firm, it's worth asking who will actually do the work, where the team is, how fees and changes are handled, and what happens after launch. We've written a neutral guide to those questions: How to choose a custom software development partner. To get ready for the first meeting, see how to prepare on our FAQ page.
We've provided software development consulting services since 2009, helping businesses plan, build and support custom software from our headquarters in Troy, Michigan. We serve clients throughout Michigan and across the United States.
A project lead in our Troy office runs your project, and everyone on it is a SharpQuest employee, in the US or India. No subcontractors.
From Michigan manufacturers such as TKS Industrial, American MSC and Plastic Omnium to enterprises such as SanDisk and IHS Markit (now S&P Global). We've also delivered for clients in the UK and Germany.
We sign your NDA, or use our own, before you share details.
We carry professional liability (E&O) insurance.
Clients typically stay with us until their projects finish, some for up to 8 years.
It's advice on what software to build and how, given by a firm that can also build it. A consultant studies how your business works, compares the options and turns the chosen one into a scope, an estimate and a plan. With us, the same team then builds and supports the software.
It helps you decide whether to buy, extend or build; writes down the scope; estimates cost and time; and, in firms like ours, designs, builds, tests and supports the software. See what a software consultant does.
When a software decision is costly to get wrong: replacing spreadsheets, modernizing an older system, connecting systems, adding AI, starting a new product, or rescuing a stalled project. See when to hire one.
Before you commit to a product, a budget or a rebuild, because changing direction is cheapest then. It also helps mid-project, when a project has stalled: we finished OnTheClock's app in 6 weeks after another vendor had worked on it for over a year.
With us there are four: a free consultation; a free scoped estimate, or paid discovery for larger projects; the build in two-week sprints with a demo at the end of each; and launch with a monthly support plan. See the phases.
From the first call to an estimate: up to five business days for small projects, three to four weeks for medium and larger ones. Building a first release then usually takes a few months; our web application page gives typical ranges by project type.
A written scope and a free estimate, or, for larger projects, a paid discovery phase with wireframes, requirements, an estimate and a project plan. You decide then whether to go ahead; there's no obligation. The full answer is on our FAQ page.
As a fixed price, by milestone, or by the hour. The consultation and estimate are free; projects by our Michigan team start at around $30,000. On a fixed price, delays don't raise the price unless the scope changes. See how fees work.
Usually, when it stops you building the wrong thing. Scoping first shows what a project will cost and whether an existing product would do the job; if it would, we'll tell you.
Agree measurable goals and acceptance criteria at the start, review working software every sprint, approve it in user acceptance testing, and judge it after launch by the business result. See how we measure success.
Bring the business problem, who will use the software, how the work is done today and any deadlines. A specification and a budget are optional. The full checklist is on our FAQ page.
Yes. SharpQuest has been headquartered in Troy, Michigan since 2009, and a project lead in our Troy office runs every project. Michigan clients include TKS Industrial, American MSC, Plastic Omnium and MEDC, and we work with businesses across the US.
Not for the decisions that matter most. AI tools can help generate ideas, draft requirements and list technical options. A consultant brings the context: how your business actually works, which assumptions hold up, and the tradeoffs between cost, risk and time. Many businesses now use AI in their planning, but the major decisions still need people who have delivered similar projects. If you're thinking of adding AI to your own software, see AI integration.
Ownership of the source code and intellectual property is set out in your contract with us. We agree on it before work starts, so you know exactly what you will own. At handover you get the source code, documentation and environment access your contract covers.
Yes, we sign your NDA, or use our mutual NDA, before you share project details.
